About Us

Alpha’s on the Riverfront is an award-winning restaurant that overlooks the Mississippi River in Fort Madison, Iowa. Alpha’s menu is carefully crafted to offer a selection of cultural cuisine. The grilled steaks range from the filet mignon to the El-Cheapo which is an 8oz sirloin grilled just the way you like it. The seafood and pasta dishes are always made to order with fresh ingredients by our head chef Ramone. The bar at Alpha’s carries many of the top named spirits and a generous selection of beers and regional wines.

Our non-smoking restaurant consists of three dining areas to choose from with views of the Mississippi River and the Old Fort. We also have a spacious meeting room that can be used for private parties and presentations, equipped with projection screens, and an annex building for larger meetings and venues. (Reservations required in advance for the annex.)

History

Alpha’s on the Riverfront is named after Lt. Alpha Kingsley who, in 1808, chose the site and supervised the first United States military post on the upper Mississippi River. Lt. Kingsley named his new post “Fort Madison” in honor of James Madison. Alpha’s overlooks the authentically reconstructed Old Fort Madison on the banks of the mighty Mississippi.

The Kingsley Inn and Alpha’s were constructed in the 1850′s and a portion of it served as a thriving multigenerational business, known as Troy Laundry, for more than a century. The Kingsley Inn and Alpha’s on the Riverfront were the vision of a group of local citizens interested in preserving a nostalgic piece of local 19th century architecture and an important remnant of their riverfront heritage. The 1990 renovation of the Troy Laundry building into the Kingsley Inn won the Iowa Governor’s Award for the “Best Reuse of an Existing Building”.
